funny, they don't look funny

TRENDS, SCHMENDS. FASHION IS FUNNY ESPECIALLY if you’re a woman, say these certified members of the Ha Ha Sisterhood. Besides sharing all the fashion problems that plague our sex, these comediennes face some decidedly unfunny scenarios: short skirts that ride up when they’re on talk shows, Worst Dressed Lists and being dissed at the Oscars by Joan Rivers. “I don’t know if you’ve checked fashion lately, but it’s a bunch of mutants running the world,” says Kathy Griffin, who played Brooke Shields’s hilarious co-worker on Suddenly Susan. “I’m a real girl, and I have real boobs and hips, and I’m like foot 3 and a half.”

So what fashions annoy the funny ladies the most?

Low-slung pants: “I can’t have my underwear hanging out like that,” says Nia Vardalos, writer and star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding.                 Cap sleeves: “They cut you just where your underarm fat really likes to kick into high gear,” explains Kathy.                                                    The no-bra look: “Kathy Lee did it, and she hasn’t lived it down,” says Joy Behar. “Anyway, my nipples are facing Venezuela at this point, so forget it.” What fashions make all of them happy? Black pants that hide everything, bras as solidly constructed as battleships, and, ah, yes, elastic waistbands. Here, they pose in some fashionable yet functional clothes.

SHOPPING: I loathe it. I’d rather take a beating than go bra-shopping.” HER CLOSET: Has 47 pairs of the same black pants. No turtlenecks, “because they make your boobs look saggy.” Ditto for short skirts, “because I have Irish Catholic, white, chubby legs.”                               ON CLEAVAGE: “Some days that’s all I’ve got. Go braless? No—they don’t always get along, so I gotta keep them together.”                 BEST/WORST MOMENT: Being named to People magazine’s 10 Worst Dressed list. “It’s the Olympics of bad dressing, and I at least have medaled."
